Remembering and Honoring the Past With the successful passing of a bond in May of 2021, Corunna Public Schools began the process and journey to close Nellie Reed Elementary in Vernon and move students to Elsa Meyer Elementary in Corunna where six classrooms were newly constructed onto the existing building. The new classrooms will be used for the first time with the start of school on August 24. Nellie Reed School was constructed in 1898 Vernon High School. An addition was built in 1931 and in 1955, the west wing was built. In the 1940s the high school was discontinued and only housed K-8th grades and then was reduced again to house the 6th grade in 1961. Vernon residents merged with the Corunna School District in 1962, when the building was renamed Nellie Reed Elementary. In 1965, the building then became a K-5 school. Prior to closing this June, the school housed begindergarten and kindergarten students. The Shiawassee Regional Education District (SRESD) purchased Nellie Reed Elementary in April of 2023 to house county Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes. The sale was bittersweet for the Family of Nellie Reed who had taught 44 years, with 41 of those years, at the Vernon school. The school was dedicated and named in Nellie Reed’s honor in 1965. Recently, during the transition sentimental items were brought to the Corunna Public Schools’ Superintendent John Fattal. Monica Wagner, granddaughter of Nellie Reed was contacted, and the items are now with Nellie Reed’s family. The keepsakes included a flag that was flown over the US Capital on September 14, 2005, at the request of Honorable Dave Camp, Member of Congress, in honor of Nellie Reed and two pictures of Ms. Reed that once hung in the building. The SRESD is working on plans to continue the legacy of Nellie Reed by honoring the former educator in the near future.
