Corunna Public Schools
August 2022 Employee of the Month
Darcie Phillips
Darcie Phillips is an office manager at Children’s Services. She is also the varsity sideline cheer coach. She was hired in March of 2011, as a part-time paraprofessional. “Being a Corunna alumnus, our district has always stood out to me from the rest, with its positive environment and the chance to work with some of the most amazing people and our great leadership. However, most importantly is the reputation for putting the students first and doing what is best for them,” said Darcie.
“Somethings that may surprise you about me is that I am part owner of D & P Livestock. We raise beef cattle, pigs, market lambs, and goats. I also have two miniature donkeys,” said Darcie.
Darcie said, “I have three things on my bucket list, to one day own the family farm, travel to all 50 states, and snorkel with sea turtles.”
“It is hard for me to pick one outstanding memory from all my years working with our littlest Cavaliers, but I would have to go with our move from the old Shiawassee Street building to Louise Peacock. Being given this chance to grow as a center has been amazing to watch. Going from 6-7 rooms to 10-11 was fantastic for not only our center, but for our district as well. I am beyond grateful to be a part of it!” said Darcie.
Darcie said, “Besides our fully inclusive preschool program, our district also has a fantastic FFA program as well. I believe these are two things that set Corunna apart from other districts.”
Darcie said, “The one person that most positively influences me is Grandpa Joe. At 92, he is still helping around the farm with everything and has not let anything stop or slow him down. I have watched him fight one battle after another over the last three years and his fight is truly amazing. I would not be who I am or where I am without him. I am forever grateful for him and everything he has instilled in me over the years.
In her spare time, Darcie said, “I enjoy raising livestock, being a 4-H leader (Seymoor Creek) and spending time with my family and friends.”

JOB / DISTRICT / COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS
Corunna Public Schools is looking for the best possible Custodians available. True to our mission statement of preparing an unprecedented number of students to be college and/or career ready, our district offers a continuum of services to meet the needs of all students. Our district is known for offering quality education in a small-town environment with the amenities of a larger community (our district buildings are five minutes away from Applebee’s, Culver’s, Meijer, Walmart, etc.).
Student loan tuition reimbursement is available to district teachers and our county’s cost of living is incredibly low. We are a class “B” school (around 130 students per grade level) with a reputation for higher standards; as a result, nearly 40% of our students are school of choice. We have the only inclusive preschool in the county. Our school is the community “hub” and Homecoming is still a big deal in our small town, which is the county seat. Our community is incredibly supportive of our district as well. We have high-achieving athletic teams and award-winning extra-curricular programs. Despite having nearly 40% of students coming to us via school of choice, our constituents passed a nearly $17 million bond a few years ago to upgrade our buildings and two more in 2021, ($7 million). We also were recently fortunate to have earned a $123,000 Michigan State Police competitive grant to upgrade security features in our buildings. First district in the state to have an on-site health clinic for employees, no copay for appointments or prescriptions.
